The heat and glare problem Exterior Solar Grey 20 2mil answers
Madico Exterior Solar Grey 20 2mil is for glass that lets in more sun, heat or glare than the room can use. Madico says an interior install can be impossible or too risky on laminated or triple pane glass. The sun heat and glare problem remains, so the film has to go on the outer face. Older windows of mixed appearance can also look patchy from the street.
How Exterior Solar Grey 20 2mil cuts heat and glare
Exterior Solar Grey 20 transmits 20% of visible light and reduces glare by 78%. It rejects 67% of total solar energy, with an SHGC of 0.34 and infrared rejection of 84%. About 30% of solar energy is reflected before it enters the glass, while 53% is absorbed.
Where Exterior Solar Grey 20 2mil fits best
NorthGuard suggests Madico Exterior Solar Grey 20 2mil for jobs like these.
- Laminated glass where Madico says interior film can be too risky.
- Triple pane units where the room side is not an option.
- Mixed or older windows that should read as one uniform neutral grey from the street.
- Sun-exposed glass that needs 78% glare reduction.
What Exterior Solar Grey 20 2mil will not do
Madico Exterior Solar Grey 20 2mil has limits that NorthGuard states before any quote.
- The film sits on the outer face, so it is exposed to weather and outdoor cleaning.
- Outside reflection of 31% gives a distinctly mirrored grey look in daylight.
- Visible light transmitted is 20%, and 53% of solar energy is absorbed, so rooms get darker and the glass type needs checking.

Exterior Solar Grey 20 2mil questions and answers
NorthGuard answers these questions about Madico Exterior Solar Grey 20 2mil with Madico's published data.
When is an exterior film better than an interior one?
Madico points to laminated or triple pane glass, where an interior install is either not possible or too risky. Exterior Solar Grey 20 goes on the outside face to get around that. Glass that can take an interior film has Madico's interior lines to choose from.
How reflective is Exterior Solar Grey 20?
Madico lists visible light reflected at 31% on the outside and 27% on the inside. Total solar energy reflected is 30%. That gives glass a clearly reflective grey look from the street.
What does Exterior Solar Grey 20 reject?
Madico lists total solar energy rejected at 67%, infrared rejection at 84% and UV rejection of at least 99%. The solar heat gain coefficient is 0.34. The shading coefficient is 0.39.
Does Exterior Solar Grey 20 hold glass together if it breaks?
Madico's exterior page says the film holds glass together if the glass breaks. That is a side benefit of the film, not a safety rating, so it does not replace a dedicated safety film. Visible light transmitted is 20%.
